How Brick Calculation Works

This calculator determines how many bricks fit per square foot by dividing 144 square inches by the area of one brick plus its mortar joint. A standard modular brick (8 × 2.25 inches) with 3/8-inch mortar joints works out to about 6.75 bricks per square foot of wall. One 80-lb bag of mortar mix typically lays about 35–40 standard bricks.

Formula

Brick + mortar area = (Brick Length + Joint) × (Brick Height + Joint). Bricks per sq ft = 144 ÷ Brick area. Total = Wall area × Bricks per sq ft × (1 + waste%).
