How Fence Calculation Works

Fence posts are typically set 8 feet apart (6 feet for vinyl or windy areas). Each section between posts gets 2 horizontal rails (3 rails for fences over 6 feet). Pickets span the full length. Posts should be buried at least 1/3 of the total height (a 6-foot fence needs posts set 2 feet deep, so buy 8-foot posts). Each post hole typically needs one 50-lb bag of fast-setting concrete.

Formula

Posts = (Total Length ÷ 8) + 1. Rails = (Posts - 1) × 2 (for 2 horizontal rails). Use 3 rails for fences over 6 feet. Pickets = Total Length ÷ (Picket Width + Gap) in feet.
