How Sand Calculation Works

The calculator computes volume from your dimensions and converts to both cubic yards and tons. Sand density varies by moisture content and type — dry sand is about 2,600 lbs/yd³, while wet sand can be 3,100+ lbs/yd³. This calculator uses 2,700 lbs/yd³ as a practical average. Always order 5–10% extra for compaction loss.

Formula

Volume (cu ft) = Length × Width × Depth(in)/12. Cubic yards = Volume ÷ 27. Sand weighs ~2,700 lbs (1.35 tons) per cubic yard. Tons = cubic yards × 1.35.
