How Topsoil Calculation Works

This calculator computes volume from your dimensions. Topsoil is lighter than sand or gravel, averaging about 2,200 lbs per cubic yard (varies by moisture content). For new lawns, spread 4–6 inches of topsoil over compacted subgrade. For garden beds and raised planters, use 8–12 inches. Topsoil settles 10–15% after watering, so order accordingly.
